When the shiny logo of an apple with a bite out of it appeared in the library of Beijing University, it faced skepticism and criticism rather than a welcome. The university has said that it is converting one room in its library to become an Apple Experience Center. The company says the center will showcase Apple products and software, but not sell them to students and faculty. But they can place orders there. Many students and media commentators question the move, saying the university is taking academic resources away from students to make a profit. They see the Apple Experience Center in the library as yet another example of the over-commercialization of Chinese universities. This development is something even top schools can't shake free from. Some commentators, however, point out that the university campus is already highly commercial, and Apple's presence is actually much more relevant to students' academic careers than some other commercial activities commonly found in universities. They think many university students love Apple products, which they can use for academic purposes. An Apple showroom makes it more convenient for students. Universities are not ivory towers. Commercialization in itself is not necessarily a bad thing unless it hinders academic teaching and research. Others say university libraries are not electronics stores. The space for the Apple center could have been used to allow more students to study and read. Renting it to a business goes against the very purpose of universities and libraries. What's more, most of Apple's products are very expensive and not easily affordable to the ordinary university students. They could be a big distraction to students, especially those who can't afford them. Setting up the Apple shop in the library may have opened the door to the commercial activities that should not be encouraged on the university campus. Why is Apple show not welcome when it appears on university campus?
