Is the Internet Killing off Language?

Jamie Carter

1 The internet is changing the way we communicate. LOL, awks, amazeballs, BRB, the use of emoji and emoticon — and even writing facial expressions such as ‘sad face’ — have all become standard in digital communications. So ingrained, in fact, that they’re changing the way we write and even talk.

2 “People are becoming less concerned with grammar, spelling and sentence structure, and more concerned with getting their message across,” says social media management consultant Gavin Hammar.

3 There’s no doubt that the consumption of abbreviated digital content is having a huge effect on language. “Over the last five years attention spans have shortened considerably, which is reflected in the contracted forms of language we see in social media,” says communications coach Robin Kermode.

4 However, some think that the internet has made us better communicators since we increasingly use much more streamlined language. “To get a message across, it must be concise and must conform to the tone used there, which includes abbreviations, acronyms and emoticons,” says Hammar.

What about emoticons and emojis?

5 The fastest growing ‘new language’ in the world is emoticons (faces) and emojis (images of objects, which hail from Japan), which are one of the biggest changes caused by digital communications. “Facial expressions, visual presence and body language have always been vital to being a confident speaker, but now emojis are blurring the lines between verbal and written communication,” thinks Kermode, who adds that cavemen had early versions of emojis on the sides of their caves. “Pictures, cartoons or emojis are ‘shortcuts’ so we can be clear about what our message really means.”

6 If you mainly use emojis, why not get a keyboard based around smiley faces and cartoon icons? In fact, such a keyboard has already been created, and while it’s more of a PR stunt the keyboards of the future will probably contain at least some emojis.

How emojis add meaning

7 Emoticons and emojis are arguably more meaningful than slang and shorthand, which can be too easily misunderstood. “I once witnessed a girl being dumped in a text, which consisted of a message with just five letters, ‘U R MY X’ – linguistically economic, but emotionally harsh,” says Kermode. Trouble is, the sender had actually meant ‘YOU ARE MINE. X’. “If he’d added three emojis — like a smiley face, a heart and a wedding ring, he might now be happily married!”

8 The same goes for a statement such as “I NEED TO SPEAK TO YOU RIGHT NOW”, which needs a qualifying emoticon or emoji to give it meaning. “It could signal an angry meeting or a passionate meeting but add a coffee cup, a big smiley face or an angry face and it becomes clear what’s really going on,” says Kermode.

9 They may be derided by traditionalists, but emoticons and emojis used to describe mood are the body language add-on that the written word has always lacked. In most instances, these icons represent language evolution and progress, not regression.

The web’s positive effects on writing

10 Some think that the internet is actually sharpening up writing skills, particularly of professional writers, creating new niches and specialisms. “[The internet] lays bare the disparity between good and bad copy, which has resulted in writers and editors becoming better educated and more aware of global grammatical standards, raising the bar overall,” says digital content creator Paul Parreira.

11 He thinks that the internet is also driving language to become more globalised, with Americanisms such as ‘road trip’ and ‘what’s up?’ being used as a conversational link now ingrained into what’s fast being called ‘International English’ or ELF (English as a Lingua Franca). It has nothing to do with where the language originated, and often those that use a basic form of ELF online can understand each other far easier than native English speakers.

12 However, online English has also spawned new specialisms and skills among professional, often native English speaking writers. “Writing has become more idiosyncratic and unique,” says Parreira, “creating new breeds of writers — those that specialise in short form and those that focus on long form ... it’s rare to find writers that can excel in both.”

Are mobile devices and short texts changing language?

13 There’s little room to worry about grammar in short messages sent over the mobile phone, goes the argument, and besides, conforming to the rules of engagement on the internet is far more important than old grammatical rules. “With people consuming so much content on their mobile devices, it is only natural that they are influenced by it and respond in the same way,” says Hammar. “Reading short bursts of poorly constructed content from a young age impacts on the learning experience and filters into our everyday lives.”

14 “It is the web culture itself rather than mobile devices and social channels that are driving some of the negative aspects of language standards,” says Parreira.

It’s all about context

15 Arguably none of this matters, except it does when those who get so used to using text-speak enter the world of work where basic online-isms like LOL (laughing out loud) — however basic that might seem to some — can easily mean ‘lots of love’.

16 It’s therefore best for those entering the workforce to assume nothing and communicate formally with older co- workers and clients, at least at first. “The lines between internet communication and business communication are being blurred, with millennials finding it difficult to switch between the two styles and identify which one is appropriate and when,” says Hammar, who thinks that people will soon struggle to express themselves in a business environment where a formal tone is usually the standard.

17 “It’s still now difficult to imagine senior executives using LOL and ROFL when signing a deal,” he says, advising that you can use shorthand to give your company a personality online to delight customers, but only if it’s used very wisely. “Remember, ‘BRB’ (meaning ‘be right back’) and ‘I will be away from my desk for the next two hours. I will respond as soon as I get back,’ are not interchangeable — it’s important to know when to use which message.”

Why changing online language doesn’t matter

18 Since society as a whole has about as much control over language as it does over earthquakes, this is a moot point at best. “Culture has a way of evolving and that’s exactly what we’re experiencing with language,” says Parreira, who points out that the spelling fix on mobile phones has improved of late. It also now offers to finish words as you type and arguably brings at least an illusion of accuracy.

19 Education will need to change, too. “It will become less of a priority to educate the youth in strict grammar usage, since the world will no longer expect it,” says Hammar. ‘Standard’ grammar is evolving, too, since digital shorthand and text-speak are now creeping into spoken language.

20 “We are now hearing people actually saying ‘sad face’ at the end of a sentence as in ‘The weekend was a disaster. Sad face’,” says Kermode, who asks if it will eventually be replaced by a new linguistic idea. “Yes, of course, it’s just that none of us know exactly what that will be yet ... quizzical face, winking smiley, rainbow.”

Don’t Fear Artificial Intelligence

Ray Kurzweil(雷·库兹威尔)

1 Stephen Hawking, the pre‑eminent physicist, recently warned that artificial intelligence (AI), once it surpasses human intelligence, could pose a threat to the existence of human civilization. Other thought leaders have voiced similar concerns.

2 If AI becomes an existential threat, it won’t be the first one. Humanity was introduced to existential risk when I was a child sitting under my desk during the civil‑defense drills of the 1950s. Since then we have encountered comparable specters, like the possibility of a bioterrorist creating a new virus for which humankind has no defense. Technology has always been a double‑edged sword, since fire kept us warm but also burned down our villages.

3 The typical dystopian futurist movie has one or two individuals or groups fighting for control of “the AI.” Or we see the AI battling the humans for world domination. But this is not how AI is being integrated into the world today. AI is not in one or two hands; it’s in 1 billion or 2 billion hands. A kid in Africa with a smartphone has more intelligent access to knowledge than the President of the United States had 20 years ago. As AI continues to get smarter, its use will only grow. Virtually everyone’s mental capabilities will be enhanced by it within a decade.

4 We will still have conflicts among groups of people, each enhanced by AI. That is already the case. But we can take some comfort from a profound, exponential decrease in violence, as documented in Steven Pinker’s 2011 book, The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. According to Pinker, although the statistics vary somewhat from location to location, the rate of death in war is down hundredfold compared with six centuries ago. Since that time, murders have declined tenfold. People are surprised by this. The impression that violence is on the rise results from another trend: exponentially better information about what is wrong with the world — another development aided by AI.

5 There are strategies we can deploy to keep emerging technologies like AI safe. Consider biotechnology, which is perhaps a couple of decades ahead of AI. A meeting called the Asilomar Conference on Recombinant DNA was organized in 1975 to assess its potential dangers and devise a strategy to keep the field safe. The resulting guidelines, which have been revised by the industry since then, have worked very well: there have been no significant problems, accidental or intentional, for the past 39 years. We are now seeing major advances in medical treatments reaching clinical practice and thus far none of the anticipated problems.

6 Consideration of ethical guidelines for AI goes back to Isaac Asimov’s three laws of robotics, which appeared in his short story “Runaround” in 1942, eight years before Alan Turing introduced the field of AI in his 1950 paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence.” The median view of AI practitioners today is that we are still several decades from achieving human‑level AI. I am more optimistic and put the date at 2029, but either way we do have time to devise ethical standards.

7 There are efforts at universities and companies to develop AI safety strategies and guidelines, some of which are already in place. Similar to the Asilomar guidelines, one idea is to clearly define the mission of each AI program and to build in encrypted safeguards to prevent unauthorized uses.

8 Ultimately, the most important approach we can take to keep AI safe is to work on our human governance and social institutions. We are already a human‑machine civilization. The best way to avoid destructive conflict in the future is to continue the advance of our social ideals, which has already greatly reduced violence.

9 AI today is advancing the diagnosis of disease, finding cures, developing renewable clean energy, helping to clean up the environment, providing high‑quality education to people all over the world, helping the disabled (including providing Hawking’s voice) and contributing in a myriad of other ways. We have the opportunity in the decades ahead to make major strides in addressing the grand challenges of humanity. AI will be the pivotal technology in achieving this progress. We have a moral imperative to realize this promise while controlling the peril. It won’t be the first time we’ve succeeded in doing this.

Part 6 Reading 1 with Translation

“Well-off Society” Marks Historic Milestone in China’s Progress

1 In the popular Chinese TV drama “Minning Town” that pays tribute to poverty alleviation, poor villagers relocated from their arid and mountainous hometown Xihaigu in Northwest China bid farewell to generational poverty and build new lives.

2 The dream of shaking off poverty coming true for Xihaigu people in the drama has now also become a reality off-screen.

3 As the Communist Party of China celebrated its 100th birthday last week, China proudly declared the realization of its first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society, bringing about a historic end to the problem of absolute poverty.

4 However, it was a hard journey for the nation as a whole to realize the goal.

5 Over 40 years ago, China put forward building a “Xiaokang society,” or a well-off society, in its pursuit of modernization. According to this vision, China would one day become a nation where people are moderately well-off — where economic prosperity is capable of moving most of the population into comfortable means.

6 It was indeed a bold vision at that time, given the large population living below the poverty line and the country’s weak industrial base.

7 (1) Upholding the principle of “crossing the river by feeling the stones,” China rolled out a slew of reform and opening-up measures in almost all aspects of society, aiming to find solutions tailored to practical situations in the country.

8 The reforms started from the rural sector. (2) Over four decades ago, 18 farmers in Fengyang County, East China’s Anhui Province, put their fingerprints on a land-contracting agreement that divided communally-owned farmlands for each family to cultivate. This adventurous move broke the egalitarian agricultural system, igniting the vitality of China’s rural areas.

9 Now, Chinese people no longer suffer from famine and malnutrition. In 2020, China saw its 17th consecutive bumper year, with its grain output reaching nearly 670 billion kg.

10 After the arduous anti-poverty fight, absolute poverty was successfully eradicated in the world’s most populous country with over 1.4 billion people. The final 98.99 million impoverished rural residents living under the current poverty line were lifted out of poverty in the past eight years. All 832 impoverished counties and 128,000 villages were removed from the poverty list.

11 (3) China also established the socialist market economy, incorporating a market-oriented approach in policy design and opening its huge market to global investors to share development opportunities with the world.

12 Foreign investors flocked to China over the years. In 2020, China became the world’s largest foreign direct investment (FDI) recipient, data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development showed.

13 China’s GDP per capita exceeded 10,000 in 2019 for the first time in history. The total GDP surpassed the 100-trillion-yuan (15.42 trillion) threshold in 2020.

14 Not to mention that China has become a global manufacturing hub and the only country in the world to have all the industrial categories listed in the United Nations industrial classification. It is also the largest producer of over 220 types of industrial products, including vehicles and computers.

15 With the targets of “Xiaokang” achieved, China now eyes common prosperity and the achievement of its second centenary goal of building China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious by the centenary of the People’s Republic of China.

16 Common prosperity also involves a narrowing of the gap between regions, urban and rural areas and in people’s incomes. The country intends to reduce the income gap and let the fruits of development be shared throughout the community, according to a blueprint for the country’s social and economic development over the next five to 15 years.

17 Modernization means China regaining its position as a world leader in science and technology as well as in business and economics; the resurgence of Chinese civilization, culture and military might; and China participating actively in all areas of human endeavor. (4) The “Four-sphere Confidences” — confidence in the path, theory, system and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics — are part of the path to modernization.

18 China is at the wheel of a reform juggernaut, revitalizing and renewing almost every aspect of the economy and society, from the financial sector to health care — above all, to a stage of high-quality development.

Why Emoji Are Suddenly Acceptable at Work

Bourree Lam

1 It wasn’t too long ago that the exclamation mark was a point of etiquette contention in the world of email and the workplace. Style and trend pieces wondered: Are they wildly inappropriate? Are they offensive? What if you just use one?

2 Language is, of course, ever‑evolving. So now that the exclamation mark has become mostly accepted, what’s next for English?

3 Emoji.

4 Not only have emoji arrived, they’ve arrived at legitimate non‑adolescent‑filled places such as messages from parents and emails among co‑workers. In one survey, 76 percent of Americans said that they have used emoji in digital communication at work. Just as it is in the rest of the world, the most popular emoji in life and work is the happy face.

5 (1) Emoticons and emoji have gone from being inappropriate for the workplace to being accepted, largely because the demographic of the workplace is changing. Millennials are now the biggest generation in the American workforce, and along with them comes new technology and mannerisms.

6 But why are people using emoticons or emoji in the workplace? The answer is that they’re useful. In emails, emoticons and emoji act as discourse particles — a word that has no semantic meaning but adds intention to a statement. (2) People tend to use emoticons when there’s some kind of what linguists call a face threat — something kind of awkward or potentially offensive, or somebody could take something the wrong way. So people will use emoticons or emoji in these instances to just add that little bit of extra inflection.

7 It’s for this reason that the happy‑face emoji dominates. The biggest problem about all electronic communication is that it’s toneless. In the absence of tone, people read negative tone into it.

8 A Scandinavian study on email in the workplace found exactly that: Emoticons in the workplace were not used to convey emotion, but rather to signal how the information in the email should be interpreted. They found three primary uses: to express positive vibes, to mark jokes, and lastly to either strengthen or soften statements that could be misread as reprimanding.

9 (3) Along with the usefulness of emoticons and emoji in clarifying tone in emails, another partial explanation for the rise of emoji at work is that digital work communication now incorporates casual communication as well.

10 Beyond email, the growing popularity of office collaboration and communication tools are increasingly taking casual work interactions online. In the past, these interactions — whether it’s to tell a joke or ask someone how their weekend was — were reserved for in‑person or on the phone. Nowadays, there’s a group collaboration tool for that — whether it’s popular TV show fans or baby photos. This moving of casual office communication online — and therefor into text — has contributed to people’s comfort level of using emoticons and emoji with their co‑workers.

11 In fact, one of the aims of office collaboration and communication tools was to let people feel comfortable with these casual interactions online so as to help them bring their whole selves to work. There is a widespread feeling that people are meant to check a lot of stuff at the door when they arrive at work. Some of that makes sense, but there’s a risk of having people feel diminished or unable to contribute fully — that’s the part office communication tools can have a shot at correcting.

12 However, don’t get too casual at work. (4) Be conscious of who the audience is, and gauge their comfort level before putting in that emoji. For example, don’t use them with a superior or a client unless they use it first and establish it as an accepted norm. One email can make or break a relationship these days, so it’s better to be careful. Linguists call this register. Register is the idea that there are different kinds of language that we use in different situations.

13 In that sense, even as people’s comfort level with emoticons and emoji in the workplace rises, communications with co‑workers online shouldn’t deviate too far from good colleague behavior offline.

14 No one likes sarcasm. It’s a very bad form of work communication. Using emoji or emoticons in a sarcastic way is just as bad as it has always been. We should bear in mind that sarcasm existed long before emoji, and it’s always been a bad tactic. We didn’t need emoji to be obnoxious.

As Robots Replace People, Where Will Workers Go?

Nouriel Roubini(鲁里埃尔·鲁比尼)

1 Technology innovators and CEOs seem positively giddy nowadays about what the future will bring. New manufacturing technologies have generated feverish excitement about what some see as a Third Industrial Revolution. In the years ahead, technological improvements in robotics and automation will boost productivity and efficiency, implying significant economic gains for companies. (1) But, unless the proper policies to nurture job growth are put in place, it remains uncertain whether demand for labor will continue to grow as technology marches forward.

2 Recent technological advances have three biases: they tend to be capital‑intensive (thus favoring those who already have financial resources); skill‑intensive (thus favoring those who already have a high level of technical proficiency); and labor‑saving (thus reducing the total number of unskilled and semi‑skilled jobs in the economy). The risk is that robotics and automation will displace workers in blue‑collar manufacturing jobs before the dust of the Third Industrial Revolution settles.

3 The rapid development of smart software over the last few decades has been perhaps the most important force shaping the coming manufacturing revolution. Software innovation, together with 3D printing technologies, will open the door to those workers who are educated enough to participate; for everyone else, however, it may feel as though the revolution is happening elsewhere. Indeed, the factory of the future may be 1,000 robots and one worker manning them. Even the shop floor can be swept better and cheaper by a robot than by any worker.

4 For the developed countries, this may seem like old news. After all, for the last 30 years, the manufacturing base in Asia’s emerging economies has been displacing that of the old industrial powers of Western Europe and North America. But there is no guarantee that gains in service‑sector employment will continue to offset the resulting job losses in industry.

5 For starters, technology is making even many service jobs tradable, enabling them to be offshored to emerging markets. And, eventually, technology will replace manufacturing and service jobs in emerging markets as well.

6 Today, for example, a patient in New York may have his MRI sent digitally to, say, Bangalore, where a highly skilled radiologist reads it for one‑quarter of what a New York‑based radiologist would cost. But how long will it be before a computer software can read those images faster, better and cheaper than the radiologist in Bangalore can?

7 Likewise, in the next decade, consumer electronics manufacturers plan to replace much of their workforce with robots. And soon enough voice recognition software will replace the call centers of Bangalore and Manila.

8 Job‑reducing technological innovations will affect education, healthcare, government and even transportation. For example, will we still need so many teachers in the decades to come if the cream of the profession can produce increasingly sophisticated online courses that millions of students can take? If not, how will all of those former teachers earn a living?

9 Governments, too, are shedding labor — particularly governments burdened by high deficits and debts. (2) And, by transforming how services are provided to the public, the e‑government trend can offset the employment losses with productivity gains.

10 Even transportation is being revolutionized by technology. In a matter of years, driverless cars may render millions of jobs obsolete.

11 And, of course technological innovation that is capital‑intensive and labor‑saving is one of the factors — together with the related winner‑take‑all effects — driving the rise in income and wealth inequality. Rising inequality then becomes a drag on demand and growth (as well as a source of social and political instability), because it distributes income from those who spend more (lower‑ and middle‑income households) to those who save more (high‑net‑worth individuals and corporate firms).

12 Obviously, this is not the first time the world has faced such problems, and the past can help serve as a model for resolving them. Late 19th‑ and early 20th‑century leaders sought to minimize the worst features of industrialization. (3) Child labor was abolished throughout the developed world, working hours and conditions became more humane, and a social safety net was put in place to protect vulnerable workers and stabilize the (often fragile) macro economy.

13 As we begin to seek enlightened solutions to the challenges that the Third Industrial Revolution presents, one overall theme looms large: the gains from technology must be channeled to a broader base of the population than has benefited so far. That requires a major educational component. In order to create broad‑based prosperity, workers need the skills to participate in the brave new world implied by a digital economy.

14 (4) Even that may not be sufficient, in which case it will become necessary to provide permanent income support to those whose jobs are displaced by software and machines. Here, too, we should attend carefully to the lessons of the past.

1    This week is the big World Robot Conference in Beijing, with many newspapers and websites writing about robots and the sector’s market potential.

2    However for years robots have already been ‘big business’. The global industrial robotics business was worth $10.7 billion in 2014, according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). China was the largest market, shipping over 57,000 industrial robots, with Japan in second, followed by the United States. According to IFR forecasts the sales figures in China are expected to continue to rise dramatically, totaling 150,000 units by 2018.

3    During the past decades, China was known for its seemingly limitless supply of low-wage workers. China’s emergence as an automation hub contradicts many assumptions about robots and the global economy. However, earlier this year China published its national plan ‘Made in China 2025’. This plan aims to modernize China’s industry, and pays special attention to its manufacturing processes, including shifting labor-intensive work to robots.

4    It is said that by the end of 2015 or early 2016 China will release a five-year development plan (as an annex to ‘Made in China 2025’) for its indigenous robot industry, ambitiously aiming to more than double the market share of made-in-China robots to 50 percent by 2020.

5    In 2014, Chinese factories accounted for about a quarter of the global ranks of industrial robots (>50 percent increase over 2013) and this boom is likely to continue. According to the IFR, it will have more installed manufacturing robots than any other country by 2017. 6    Currently, the global market is dominated by industrial robots, having about an 80 percent market share. The use of robots currently accounts for 10 percent of the manufacturing process, but that figure is expected to rise to 20 percent by 2025. Many companies therefore still focus their investments on the development of industrial robotics. But it is clear that the market of service robots will surpass that of industrial robotics in the future. We already see that the application of robots is extending from manufacturing industry into the service sector, including medicine and healthcare, not just domestic applications.

7    It is interesting to see at the conference that Chinese researchers have already mastered technology for the whole industrial chain of service robotics. They have developed various service robots, including those capable of cleaning, cooking, and helping the elderly and handicapped.

8    But China still has a long way to go, according to the general manager of a technology firm in Fujian province: “Key parts of industrial robots, such as sensors and motors, are still imported, and not many robot makers are ready for mass production.”

9    There are more than 1,000 robot-related firms across China, but quality — not quantity — is the robot sector’s biggest challenge.

10    More and more Chinese factories are starting to introduce robots in a bid to replace human labor. There are two (linked) reasons why they are looking into new strategies and automatization: Labor shortage caused by more people rejecting factory jobs. Rising wages. Chinese factory workers nowadays earn two to six times more than their peers in Thailand or Cambodia.

11    Although the IFR expects China to have more installed manufacturing robots than any other country in 2017, it has to be mentioned that China’s robot-to-worker ratio is still rather low, about 36 robots per 10,000 factory workers. South Korea employs the most robots, with 478 per 10,000 workers, followed by Japan with 315 and Germany with 292 robots per 10,000 workers.

12    Let’s see what the future will bring or how we can shape it. Whether a dystopian future where the ‘droids are taking our jobs’ will happen, or if we can master robots and end up in a more pleasant future. So far in China there seems little evidence that robots are having a big impact on employment. Average urban wages in China rose more than 10% in 2014, and the country remains on target to create at least 10 million new jobs this year. But given the mentioned low robot-to-worker ratio and without assessing the possibilities of introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into white collar jobs, it’s too early to make any conclusions based on these figures.                             13    To finish, let’s look again at the question of whether China will be a leader in robotics. Certainly it can be said that it is already leading if you look at the market share of industrial robots. As Chinese companies keep pushing the boundaries of innovation, there are high hopes that they will cease sourcing  technology and key parts from foreign manufacturers and that China will be an all-round leader in robotics.

1.It talks about the reasons why Chinese factories choose to use robots instead of human workers.

2.It shows the gap between China and some developed countries in robot-to-worker ratio.

3.It introduces a national plan to upgrade China’s industry and apply robots in production.

4.It mentions that service robots will have a larger market than industrial robots in the future.

5.It points out that the biggest problem of China’s robot industry lies in product quality rather than the number of companies.

6.It predicts China will become the world’s largest market for installed manufacturing robots by 2017.

7.It states China’s goal to raise the market share of home-grown robots to 50% by 2020.

8.It mainly discusses whether robots will greatly affect people’s jobs in the future.

9.It expresses people’s expectation that China will become an overall leader in the robot industry.

10.It says Chinese experts have grasped the full industrial chain technology of service robots.

China Has a Word for Its Crass New Rich

By Robert Frank

1 How do you say “nouveau riche” in China? Tuhao.

2 As in, “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” are tuhao. Covering the inside of your Rolls-Royce with jade is tuhao. Or, the most popular use, the new gold iPhone 5s is now known in China as the “tuhao gold iPhone.”

3 Tuhao roughly translates as “crass rich,” since “tu” means uncultured and “hao” means bold or bullying. (Though some sites say that “hao” translates better as “wealth” or “splendor.”) It joins “nouveau riche,” “parvenu” and “bling” and other terms for the newly rich who have more money than taste.

4 And while it’s quickly gone viral in China, where flashy new wealth is sparking growing resentment, it’s also gaining global traction as the luxury-hungry Chinese rich are venturing around the world.

5 The number of tuhao websites, blogs, comic books, TV shows and ad slogans is exploding. And tuhao’s legitimacy could soon become official, with the keepers of the Oxford English Dictionary saying they may include tuhao in its next edition.

6 “A lot of media has given attention to the word ‘tuhao’ which also triggered our interest,” said the management authorities at Oxford University Press, the publisher of the dictionary. “If the influence of ‘tuhao’ keeps rising, we will consider including it in our dictionaries of the 2014 edition.”

7 The Oxford folks say the word “tuhao” dates back more than 100 years, when it referred to wealthy landholders who would bully peasants or underlings. Oxford said the new usage has taken off in the past two months with growing media attention.

8  In China, where the new rich are buying everything from gold-plated BMWs to $$1 million dogs and $$5,000 bottles of wine, the term is the word of the moment.

9 Tuhao was listed as one of the top “hot words” recently in China Daily. As the newspaper explained: “People find tuhao to be aptly worded, because nouveaux riches have garish tastes and lack good cultural traits and sophistication.

10 Although ‘tuhao’ is a derisive term, it is being widely used by netizens to poke fun at the rich who are like luxurious products with little use or content.”

11 Tuhaos have become the chief target of ridicule on the China blogosphere. As a China media blog put it, they are China’s version of the “Beverly Hillbillies.’”

12 The new gold iPhone 5s, which has become a huge seller in China, is now called “Tuhao Gold.”

13 Tuhao has also become the center of one of the most popular jokes making the rounds on the China blogosphere. A young man asks a Zen master, “I’m wealthy, but unhappy. What should I do?” The Zen master says, “Define ‘wealthy.’” The young man answers, “I have millions in the bank and three apartments in central Beijing. Is that wealthy?” The Zen master silently holds out a hand. The young man says: “Master, are you telling me that I should be thankful and give back?”

14 The Zen master says, “No ... Tuhao, can I become your friend?”

15 Now, the phrase “Tuhao, can we be friends” is quickly becoming a catchphrase in China — which shows that as much as they dislike the tuhao, they also want to share in their good fortunes.

“No Man’s Land” Breathes New Life into Agriculture

1 After graduating from university, Qi Lu, who comes from a family of farmers, became a farmer himself due to his love of cultivation. But he was soon to find out that love for a profession might not be unconditional.

2 Farming was for long largely considered to be a low-income job fraught with hard labor and toil. So it is perhaps not surprising that Qi, working as a machinery operator, seriously thought about quitting a few years ago. But then his trade underwent tremendous changes.

3 The changes have come with advances in technology, which Qi and his fellow farmers believe could totally change their way of life for the better.

4 It’s the harvest season now. The rural township where Qi works is golden in color with paddy crops. The harvested paddy will be threshed, dried and milled for rice, which is the most common staple food in China.

5 In a field of about 1.3 acres, or the size of two standard soccer fields, a red-and-white machine is slowly moving across the golden paddy, leaving short yellow stalks behind it. It is unmanned. When the load is full, it moves toward the edge of the field, where a tractor is waiting to offload its harvested crops. The tractor is also unmanned.

6 Such a scene was beyond the imagination of Qi, who is now 40 and director of the town’s agricultural machinery cooperative, when he started working here in 2012. Back then they could hardly use the simple machinery available because the fields were uneven. Manual labor was the way to go when applying fertilizer and pesticide, as well as planting seedlings and harvesting.

7 The shortage of younger farmers, the inefficiency of the work and the low income in the industry eventually led to the idea of introducing a revolution in rice cultivation in the town where Qi works in 2015.

8 Now, the future has arrived with machinery equipped with China’s BeiDou satellite navigation system and smart control technology nearly replacing human labor from sowing to harvesting in 13 acres of the town’s paddy fields.

9 For agricultural machinery operators like Qi, unmanned machinery has significantly increased their welfare. There is no risk of getting stuck in the muddy fields. Work is more effective with standardized machine operation eliminating human error.

10 Qi leads a team of 45 machinery operators mostly in their 30s.

11 “It’s more difficult for the older generation of farmers to adapt to new technology, but it’s handy for the younger ones,” he observes. “Our operators are also becoming more versatile, which will enable us to run our farms eventually with fewer hands.”

12 The young ones are satisfied with their income, which has grown many times from a decade ago, Qi added.

13 Qi’s role as a farmer has also changed in the process. He now offers consultation to the tech company that develops the driverless machinery on route planning for the harvester to maximize harvests and for the seedling transplanter to work more effectively.

14 However, human labor has not yet been entirely replaced. To reduce the wear and tear of the sickle on the harvester, the farmers have to trim the edges of the fields to facilitate the smooth passage of the machines. Besides, the machines are unable to harvest paddy plants that are bent too much after stormy weather. Also, the fields are still manually irrigated.

15 Qi proudly remarks that the rice they harvested has been widely recognized for quality. “Our loyal customers come to buy our rice right after the harvest,” he says, adding that the cooperative sowed 100 acres of top-quality paddy this year, which accounts for about 20 percent of all paddy fields it cultivates.

16 The unmanned cultivation of more paddy fields in the future and the digital management of the entire cultivation process will further boost the quality of their rice.

17 Qi’s cooperative plans to expand the unmanned cultivation experiment to over 100 acres of paddy fields and establish a digital platform to monitor the entire cultivation cycle by the end of 2022.

18 By the end of 2025, over 600 acres, or half of the paddy fields in the town, will be cultivated and harvested by driverless machinery, which will greatly cut costs for the cooperative.

19 “We estimate that we can save about 100 yuan for 1 mu (666 square meters) of paddy fields by using driverless machinery and reducing human labor, which would mean 2 million yuan for all of our paddy fields, which is not a small sum at all in agriculture,” Qi explains. “The income generated by 1 mu of field will increase by 1,000 yuan with rice products of higher quality, which would mean 20 million yuan for all of the fields.”

20 The town where Qi works has an ambition to develop agricultural tourism, attracting visitors to its pig farm, rice factory and paddy fields, a large wintersweet garden, orchards and a fishing center.

21 The town government believes that it will further improve the life of locals who are moving into new residential quarters from their farmhouses and renting their farmlands to the local collective and family farms for large-scale agricultural production.
