You're probably all familiar with the saying "Two heads are better than one." We use this expression to say that when two or more people work together, they're able to create something or solve a problem faster and in a better way than if they did it alone. And today, this is what I want to talk about: the idea of collective—or group—intelligence, and to look at some tools we can use to worldwide. Take, for example, Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. It has millions of articles in more than two hundred languages about everything and anything you can think of. People from all over the world have created this encyclopedia—together, and without being paid at all. Say I want to write an entry on early jazz music, for instance. I start the article, adding the information I know, then others add to it, or edit it. Together we use our collective knowledge to write an article that people all over the world can read. Or take another example. For years, an international team of scientists were doing AIDS research. The scientists were studying the same problem for almost ten years with no success. Then they decided to use an online game called Foldit. It turns scientific problems into a game. The scientists put their problem on the Foldit site and gamers around the world studied the problem. In about two weeks, by working together and sharing their knowledge, the gamers solved the problem. Globally, millions of people are now working together in ways we just weren't able to twenty years ago.【缺少答案,请补充】
Have you ever looked at an ant and wondered how such a small creature was able to do so much? Ants travel long distances, build huge structures to live in, and sometimes even catch much larger animals to eat. For such a tiny insect, they seem quite intelligent. But according to scientists, individual ants aren't smart; ant colonies are. A group of ants can solve problems individual ants can't, such as finding food quickly or protecting their home from other insects. In a colony, no single ant knows what's best for the group, and though there is a queen, her only role is to lay eggs; there is no group leader telling the others what to do. How is it possible, then, for the colony to get anything done? According to scientists who study ants, the colony's success is a result of self-organizing—each ant looking around, seeing what has to be done, and then doing its part. Perhaps this is finding food, or caring for the young, or many other tasks. Each ant has no idea that many others are doing the same thing at the same time to help the group, but it doesn't matter because the work gets done. And there's a lot, say scientists, that humans can learn from this kind of behavior. There's a lot ants can teach us about working together and thinking about more than ourselves to improve our communities, say scientists. For example, every day millions of people drink bottled water and then throw away the plastic containers. But imagine the difference it would make if each person recycled his or her bottle. Like an ant in the colony, each person would, in fact, contribute to the greater good, simply by doing his or her part. So the next time you're wondering if it's worth it to recycle that plastic bottle, or volunteer your time, or go and vote, think about the ants in the colony and remember this: your actions matter, even small ones, even if you don't see how.【缺少答案,请补充】
The Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music funded by the Chinese government near Lebanon's capital Beirut will be a center of attraction for the Middle East region, said Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Thursday. "It wouldn't have been possible to build this artistic and cultural beacon if it weren't for the cooperation between the Chinese and Lebanese governments," Mikati told Xinhua News Agency while he visited the conservatory to check the completion of the project's first phase. Mikati said he hopes Lebanon cooperates with China on a bigger scale. "The Chinese government expressed its readiness to support Lebanon in all fields," he noted, adding that Lebanon will soon receive support from China in the field of solar energy. Qian Minjian, the Chinese ambassador to Lebanon, said that this project would allow the Lebanese people "to have access to a professional place to enjoy great performances." "This project will be a symbol of the friendship between Lebanon and China to strengthen ties between the two peoples, and a successful example of joint work," Qian said. He restated China's readiness to continue supporting Lebanon on all levels. The conservatory will take years to be constructed. It features teaching rooms, a library, lecture halls and auditoriums, and a theater that can host up to 1,200 people.
