When I was studying English at a training center in Washington D.C in 2008,I shared a house with two young Americans,Jim and Steve.Jim was studying French and Steve Chinese,both at the Foreign Service Institute.We shared many things in common,but we also thought and acted quite differently.Steve was interested in speaking Chinese.He always tried every opportunity to talk with me with his very English-like pronunciation.I was often touched with his diligence.However.I wanted to practice English with him,too.So we often spoke at the same time in the other’s mother tongue.Jim was fresh from college and the youngest of the three.He was going out all the time.The only time we met was at breakfast.There was a small round table in our kitchen,where we sat around to enjoy our food.Steve had Chinese fast food such as dumplings or noodles,and I ate bread and boiled eggs.But Jim often just drank a cup of tea because he had nothing in his fridge.He was too busy dating pretty French girls to do any shopping.I often offered him some of my food.But Steve told me in his poor Chinese that I didn’t need to do that.He said that it was Jim’s own fault and that it served him right.Although he was learning Chinese,he still held his American sense of values. As far back as the Shang Dynasty,people wore carved(雕刻)masks made of bone and shells.They shouted “nuo,nuo” in a loud voice to scare away evil spirits.Though a lot has changed since then,a special class in a middle school in Pingxiang,Jiangxi Province,is taught where students can learn how to recreate these Nuo masks. They draw outlines on a pumpkin or melon,then carefully carve out the eyes,nose and mouth. “These exercises are important for anyone who wants to be a Nuo mask maker,” said their teacher,59-year-old Peng Guolong,who is one of the first-generation inheritors of Nuo mask carving to keep this tradition alive. Peng said, “Nuo is our traditional culture in Pingxiang.When we were young,we danced the Nuo dance.But it’s hard to pass it on.” The good news is that Nuo masks,known for their intricate(复杂的)designs,are gradually gaining popularity in the market. “These days,they aren’t often used in rituals(仪式),but many people buy Nuo masks to display at home as art.I’ve got a lot of them in my house,too,” Peng said. “I first discovered painting when I was 8.By the time I was 13,my father had taught me the arts of oil painting,Nuo mask carving and embroidery(刺绣),” he said. When he was 25,he worked in a company in Guangzhou,Guangdong Province,as a painter and designer.In 1996,Peng returned to his hometown to set up a Nuo mask carving factory. At the 2010 Poyang Lake Ecological(生态的)Festival held in Nanchang,capital of Jiangxi,Peng’s Nuo masks were a huge success,selling out immediately,and even the masks he created on the spot were pre-ordered by customers. Since then,his Nuo masks have become popular in cities such as Guangzhou,Shanghai,Hong Kong and Beijing,and have even been exported to the Untied States and Japan. Peng believes that ____.So far,he has trained 30 apprentices(徒弟).He said, “I hope that in the future,with the help of factories,we can increase production and allow more people to discover and appreciate Nuo masks.”

Getting around Shanghai is quite easy for Western visitors.Road signs are in both Chinese and English,as are the signs for the stations of the city’s ever-enlarging subway system.At the time of my writing,April 2009,the city is crisscrossed by eight subway lines,and the aim is to double that by the opening of the Shanghai Expo in May 2010. Shanghai’s Subway System Non-Chinese speakers should have little trouble navigating the subway.Each station shows maps of the system,with stations listed in both Chinese and English.On board the trains upcoming stops are announced in both languages,though finding the correct exit in some of the larger stations can be a challenge.At People’s Square in the heart of the city,it is not unusual to come out at a different exit at each visit. Shanghai’s Transport Card For those staying a few days or longer in Shanghai,it is worthwhile getting a transport card.It can be bought at subway stations and some convenience stores,and can be used for travel on the subway,most buses and in taxis.The fare is taken away directly from the card as it is passed through the card reader at the entrance to subway stations and by the door on buses.

You’ve just been given a major task and want to do it well, but it seems that the minute you get started, you’re interrupted. First, Jane stops by. Then, it’s the phone. If only you could rearrange them without breaking your concentration. And you can! We’ve heard about quality time at home--why not quality time on the job? Begin by finding out those parts of the day during which you’re most creative.You may work best in the morning or in the afternoon. No matter when--just find your time and build a wall around it. Say that for you, quality time begins at ten. Focus on your major task then, and don’t let anything interrupt you. If you have a secretary, tell her or him to hold all calls and visitors; if you don’t, try to ask a colleague to help you. The point is that both outsiders and colleagues will know that you will not be available for a part of each day. Why? Because you are working! Prepare for this special block of time as carefully as you would for an important meeting. Don’t waste precious minutes searching for memos or notes.Be ready to begin precisely at ten, and get the most out of every second.You might like to use your block simply for thinking about a project, problem or a new idea. Start small--maybe thirty or forty minutes, three times a week, building up to at least an hour. Sure, you’ll have to chip away at your block a little sometimes, but guard that hour as you would do to any other valued possession.
