Your first college semester:A freshman year that leads to graduation Make the right decisions during your first semester and your freshman year.Your freshman year has started, You've settled into your dorm room and met your roommate. Your first college semester is underway. The decisions you make during your freshman semester and your freshman year will put you on the path for success and a college degree... or , have adjusted to your new roommate and sent " Yeah, Team" sweat-shirts to your folks back home. In short , the newness of college life has worn off and perhaps some of your classes have become boring. Take a deep breath and spend a few minutes planning for the next four years. These four years and what you do with them will shape the rest of your life. Will you finish with a degree or without one? The difference could be $ 1 million in lifetime earnings.Following this advice to make sure you complete college with that all-important degree :1. Begin thinking about a major during your freshman year Don't rush this decision; it does n 't have to be made during your first semester or even your freshman year. Look through the course listing in the back of the college catalog and see what courses peak your interest. Meet with a counselor(辅导员,指导教师)and schedule an assessment test that measures your skills and interests, Think you want to be a teacher? Spend a day in the classroom as a volunteer. Interested in law enforcement? Ride along with a police officer for the night. ·2. Grades are n 't everything, but your final GPA is important College is about learning, and that happens inside and outside the classroom. In the end.you want activities as well as your diploma on your resume. But don't let anyone kid you. The final grade point average is an indicator of not only what you've learned, but how easily you learn. That latter is important in a workplace that is changing at record speeds. if you've earned C 's throughout college, a future employer may wonder how long it will take you to master new software or management skills. Shoot for a B average. Even better, see what you college' s guidelines are for different honors categories, These may be listed as " honors"" high honors." Most colleges, though, use the Latin terms: cum laude , summa cum laude and magna cum laude. Shoot for one of these categories. ·3. Balance your classes Don' t try to take both semesters of anatomy(解剖学) at one time. Likewise, don't load up on the easy classes your first semester, Try to have balanced schedules with equal hours of challenging courses and courses you expect to excel in. Make sure you have one class each semester in a subject you enjoy. For example, if you need a foreign language and you don' plan on working in the Middle East, why spend your freshman year studying Farsi(波斯语)?Instead, choose an easier language like Spanish or French. Save your sweating for the difficult courses you' ll be required to take. A balanced schedule is more likely to lead to a balanced GPA. ·4. Get help when you need it The day before your final exam is not the time to be seeking a Calculus(微积分) tutor. Most colleges offer free or subsidized tutoring. Taking advantage of these services doesn't mean you're not smart; it actually means the opposite. Staying on top during your freshman year means you won't fall behind and you're more likely to graduate on time. lf you don 'understand a math lesson or if you don't gel the hidden meanings in " Animal Farm," go through your college's tutoring office and get a little help. Who knows? After you conquer the subject, you may be asked to tutor the following semester! ·5. Get to know at least one professor Find a professor you like and make it part of your job to get to know that professor.Chances are the professor will take you under his or her wing and become your supporter. He or she will go to bat for (支持) you when you need an override, can back you up when you need an extra day or two on an assignment and may even help you find an on-campus job. Show interest in a professor's research or writing. Developing a relationship with a professor during your freshman year can be difficult, but many of your classmates won't even try.
